The team studied the movements of the thumb and developed "computational methods of optimization", to determine where the letter should be indicated.

Siemens SK65 has a split qwerty keyboard and one simply used both thumbs

We already jump about a bit without too many problems. For instance on a US keyboard the other symbols we now use a lot are different to UK keyboards. If you use both as I do within a few minutes you are back in the groove. Likewise numerical keypads are often different. Your computer one is laid out differently to the ones used on ATM's or PDQ's. Before people used messaging where one key was used for four or five different characters I'm sure that many would state it would not work - but it does. I have n doubt that this new layout will be faster - once you have gotten used to it. The question is of course traction. Just because something is better does not make it successful - see Betamax vs VHS.

Trained KALQ users were able to reach 37 words per minute'

Why would I want to use a keyboard that I can only type at 37 words a minute when with qwerty I reach 50+?

On a smart phone touchscreen. I'm impressed. The Guinness team are on their way to ensure that the next world record book is updated. The current world record is 264 characters in 56.57 seconds. If we assume that you can type at 50+ then shall we say 55 words? That, using the average word length of 5.1 means you can do 280 characters per minute. Congratulations you are actually the fastest touch screen typist in the world. If you can give me your details I will submit them to the correct authorities and you will be famous and rich.

Another keyboard layout that no one will use because everyone's used to qwerty.

Still - the good thing about android devices is that if you want to use a different keyboard you can.

Let's hope you are wrong and that there are a lot of people who are willing, even eager, to try this promising new app.

QWERTY is an anachronism and this app creates an opportunity for the curious to try an alternative without much effort.

Critically, no one needs to buy a new keyboard to carry out the experiment.

Precisely.  QWERTY is the default and everyone's used to it.  That there might be better layouts is irrelevant because they'll never reach critical mass.  It's just the way things are.

Should have added that Apple should enlarge the iPad split keyboard and stop it jumping around during typing. How come none of this has occurred to the thousands of bright techies Apple employs?

At last. The sooner Apple adopt this and modify their split keyboard on the iPad so that it doesn't cover where users want to type the better. May even lift its share price.

Nothing new here - This was attempted years ago in the early 80's.  I think it was Sir Clive Sinclair that created a keyboard which could allow for much quicker text entry but it never took off. (the original reason for the query keyboard was of course to avoid the hammers locking on common words).

Nothing much new here either - the piece makes it clear that "Many alternatives have been developed since" the QUERTY layout was developed.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. What was incredible to me was that I could see the Mac team in the first few rows. It was as though none of us could believe that we'd actually finished it. Everyone started crying."

The wrong direction

Although this is the first post about my four hour workweek, it did not just start for me. If you read the about me section, that was almost a year ago. So how did I do? Well, I've made some progress. By falling and standing up. By making decisions and ignoring some. After my breakdown I...

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...
