Prior to reduce the problem for Joomla

Like Joomla! developer, I often find myself supporting users of their software. Sometimes, despite my best intentions, I crashed into a stone wall: server setup wrong. In this case, I explain to my users, what is the problem and ask them to contact their master to rectify it. One of the most annoying situations I found myself a case, when the host replies : "we cannot do it for security reasons". I would admit, if only the owner actually knew what they were saying. And, Yes, I am specifically talking about the URL fopen wrappers and the fact that they stupidly disabled on many hosts.

Most people are ignorant and think they can get good hosting for $1.79 a month!

The old rule “you get what you pay for” doesn’t exist here I think everyone thinks it is.

“All for nothing” that applies. I am now testing CloudLinux together with Cpanel with some of my VPS guys and that seems to take care of most problems like this.

So many issues with bad hosting companies. With small site hosting being such a competitive commodity it's amazing that anyone can make money at it with such a poor understanding of what they're doing. The php issue I seem to have had several times recently is hosts that have incorrectly installed php and therefore creating permission errors anytime I need to upgrade or install anything.

That's why hosts need good technical teams which understand the repercussions of their actions. I've seen many hosts relying on bad advice given in an infamous hosting forum (I bet you know what I mean) by other people who don't understand what they are doing. Basing a server's setup on hearsay without understanding what you're doing is virtually always worse than using the defaults and pray for the best.

    Interesting. But reading comments.

Once your sites grow to big for cheap shared hosting the only next step at sensible cost is VPS. And BANG you are suddenly on your own... going from a euro/dollar a month to 30 or more a month gives you huge performance gains... but server configuration is a foreign concept. The VPS host say we cannot help... hire a pro. The pro's say your too small I am too busy, or they say pay 3000 per year contract and you get support. Duuh.

So we google we hassle the forums and we try and cope... it is tough. We have no idea if our server is safe or not, if the changes we have to make to get Joomla working are good or bad.

So blogs like this do help - if mostly over the head.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. What was incredible to me was that I could see the Mac team in the first few rows. It was as though none of us could believe that we'd actually finished it. Everyone started crying."

The wrong direction

Although this is the first post about my four hour workweek, it did not just start for me. If you read the about me section, that was almost a year ago. So how did I do? Well, I've made some progress. By falling and standing up. By making decisions and ignoring some. After my breakdown I...

Going crazy – doing crazy

I ended up going on a trip to Oxford (UK), visiting some international friends I made by tango dancing, while it also was an opportunity to go dancing in London and Oxford.

Staying over with a friend was very nice and also useful. It made my trip cost way less, while I also had some...

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...

How to get indoor an orchids to grow and bloom?

The thing which, apart from Climate Gate, really knocked them sideways was that bitterly cold December 2013.

Louise wouldn't remember it because she was with Chris Huhne in Cancun at the time and kept telling us how warm it was poolside — while it was –15ºC here and...
