How to decide which operating system to choose for your hosting plan: Linux or Windows

Consider carefully the kind of operating system your hosting provider has to offer before settling on a hosting plan. This is especially because when using web applications to blog, podcast or create a shopping cart you will need to check with the developers' architecture to determine which language was used to create the application.

By establishing this, you will be in a better position to make a decision regarding the hosting solution you would want to use. Make sure you find out the type of development language and sql database the application connects with before making a determination.

Note however that the choice of your home operating system will not affect the cost of the hosting account you choose.

Linux is the most popular operating system that web servers use. Because of this, Linux- based hosting will have more features that web designers expect.

However, some users will prefer Windows- based hosting for their servers especially when using windows specific applications like ASP Classic, ASP.NET, MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server), MS Access (Microsoft Access), Visual Basic Development or C#.

ASP.NET applications typically require some programming on your computer before you can use them online.

Choose a Linux Hosting account if you're going to use PHP, Python, Ruby, CGI, or Perl. Most hosting providers use MySQL database for their Linux customers.

If you're storing form information in a database, you want a Windows hosting account. Otherwise you can use either Linux or Windows hosting.

If you need to use PHP, but still require a Windows hosting account, you will need to select Windows IIS 7. IIS 7 is an option for your Windows account as part of the setup process.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. What was incredible to me was that I could see the Mac team in the first few rows. It was as though none of us could believe that we'd actually finished it. Everyone started crying."

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...

How to get indoor an orchids to grow and bloom?

The thing which, apart from Climate Gate, really knocked them sideways was that bitterly cold December 2013.

Louise wouldn't remember it because she was with Chris Huhne in Cancun at the time and kept telling us how warm it was poolside — while it was –15ºC here and...
