Joomla developer and putting index.html in directory

If you are in Joomla! expanding development, you are undoubtedly familiar with the rule index.html that is the necessity to put a blank page index.html file in any directory containing the PHP files. This habit is so rooted mentality Joomla! developers, which is now called the “security feature” and created preconditions for publication Joomla! Extensions Directory. The fact is, whether this is a security feature or we are trying to solve the wrong problem?

First, let's look at the reasons for putting index.html files anywhere. As you probably know, most web servers, if you don't put index.html file within the folder, all of its contents are listed in the browser. For example, when I delete index.html the file from the cache directory and access it as http://www.example.com/cache/ I get a full listing of all my cache the contents of the directory.

As I read further on I became more and more angry at JED. I think it's time to flush out the idiots who have no idea how to do their jobs, and are going to tell people what to do when they have no experience in the area.

I believe there is a process to get a new JED leader appointed. Hopefully the new person in charge of the JED will fix all the stupid rules which have nothing to do with protecting Joomla! and its users.

Thanks for the write up. Interesting stuff.  When organisations grow, you get these kind of difficult issues. I really hope things are going to be streamlined a bit better.

And for you, do you really need JED? Your site holds the most important extensions everyone installing Joomla should use first before looking at JED at all.

As long as there are newbies in Joomla! and I want to expand my user base, I certainly do need to be listed in JED. About a third of the people who browse the download page of the free version come from the JED. Direct referrals who become subscribers are much, much lower but it's not the complete picture. People come for the free version, try it, outgrow it and become subscribers. If I am not listed in JED anymore my competitors will get these people. So we're in a position where we need to grow more features to keep existing clients and we need to stop growing features and remove old ones to satisfy the JED which is necessary to acquire new clients. This is crazy. The way current JED rules work promote bad code and trivial extensions. JED is shooting its proverbial feet.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. What was incredible to me was that I could see the Mac team in the first few rows. It was as though none of us could believe that we'd actually finished it. Everyone started crying."

The wrong direction

Although this is the first post about my four hour workweek, it did not just start for me. If you read the about me section, that was almost a year ago. So how did I do? Well, I've made some progress. By falling and standing up. By making decisions and ignoring some. After my breakdown I...

Going crazy – doing crazy

I ended up going on a trip to Oxford (UK), visiting some international friends I made by tango dancing, while it also was an opportunity to go dancing in London and Oxford.

Staying over with a friend was very nice and also useful. It made my trip cost way less, while I also had some...

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...

How to get indoor an orchids to grow and bloom?

The thing which, apart from Climate Gate, really knocked them sideways was that bitterly cold December 2013.

Louise wouldn't remember it because she was with Chris Huhne in Cancun at the time and kept telling us how warm it was poolside — while it was –15ºC here and...
