Philip Coggan writes: Yes, although that's always been the case. I'd like to put a plug in for historians. People have been grappling with these issues – the rights of debtors and creditors, the nature of money, the best way to promote economic growth – for centuries. But sometimes it seems as if economists think no discussion is valid unless it has several equations, a bunch of jargon terms and references to 27 academic papers. When Christine Lagarde was appointed to head the IMF, I heard several people say "Well, she's not an economist..."
