I'm sure they probably work well, but I'm sceptical enough of Google knowing all my search and e-mail data, let alone giving them free reign on my operating system.

It isn't Google, you should be worrying about - Google just uses the data to push adverts to you, nothing more. It is the US Administration, NSA, CIA and the nasty things they can and will do with it that you should be worrying about.

The CIA and NSA are not really there to fight terrorism - that's the FBI's job. CIA and the NSA are espionage agencies. In other words, it is their job to spy on people and use that information and dirty tricks to advance the interests of the US (and incumbent  US Administration). This means using information to spy on politicians, bureaucrats, activists etc. that the US Administration deems unhelpful to US interests and using the information to discredit or blackmail them, spy on political partners ahead of meetings in order to use the information for tactical advantage, and carry out industrial espionage to help US interests and US maintain US technological advantage by eliminating any technological advantage that European companies may develop, etc.

This is really the CIA/NSA core function, and if they were not doing all this with the data collected under the pretext of fighting terrorism, they would simply be failing in their specified duty. That is what all of us should be worrying about, and not what adverts Google will be pushing our way.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. Staying over with a friend was very nice and also useful. It made my trip cost way less, while I also had some...

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...

How to get indoor an orchids to grow and bloom?

The thing which, apart from Climate Gate, really knocked them sideways was that bitterly cold December 2013.

Louise wouldn't remember it because she was with Chris Huhne in Cancun at the time and kept telling us how warm it was poolside — while it was –15ºC here and...
